I lost count how many times we've been called to look at the job where relatively new windows aren't functioning or are in the very bad state / often rotting after less than a decade of installation!!
One of the most important objectives of our business is not only to recreate the style of the traditional window and doors, but to achieve quality and durability of the windows and doors for many years to come, same as previous generations managed with windows 100 years ago.
And if you’re hoping to add or retain value of your period property, then choose the company to do your windows carefully and consider if they are able to replicate the windows with precision. Attention to detail is paramount when it comes to replicating traditional style timber windows, especially in conservation areas and for listed buildings.
You may think it an overkill – window is window, but the details like slim profile of the traditional windows, horns and glazing configuration are all very important when preserving classic style of the given period – as well as the materials windows are made in.
It is not quite possible to replicate detail of the traditional timber window in UPVC. The details is also more than often missed on the factory made windows. And don't get me started on the imported sash windows!
They don't match the correct proportions of the traditional windows – they are manufactured fast to cut the cost without any regard to the detail, often very bulky, glazing configuration is not correctly replicated and horn detail usually completely omitted.
What To Look Out For
DO opt for longevity over price - buy once for a life time! DON'T pay cheap, pay twice.
DO check quality / grade of the timber - lower graded timber will have more knots / defects which comprimises strength and durability of your windows.
DO check style of glazing - our windows are internally glazed into solid timber profile, hence more durable and weathe witstanding over the time, unlike the exterior beaded or putty glazed windows.
DO check about timber treatment and paint finish. SAY NO to spray painted windows! Spray painting is cost effective / CHEAP way to finish off the windows, but IT IS NOT durable or pretective particularly for external windows and doors.
DO opt for CERTASS or FENSA registered installer.
DO make sure original window style is carefuly replicated.
DO speak to previous customers and do see the completed installations where possible. It is not same as seeing windows sitting in the workshop or shop shelf, as is on the completed installation!
BEWARE of the imported windows and doors, made out of proportions, not matching the original style of traditional windows and doors and using cheap / low grade timber.
REMEMBER you want to replace windows once and for all, and not every 10 years.
At Sash Window Doctor Ltd. we have experience and expertise to recreate traditional timber sash and casement windows with precision, taking time to replicate every detail. Our windows are hand made in top graded timber, only - we don't use lower graded / cheaper timber, which contributes to the longevity.
We are proud to play important part in maintaining architectural heritage of the conservation areas.
